FYI: Keep an eye out for a special cameo from Natasha Lyonne as Luka’s ballet teacher. The music, when present, was fantastic and you cannot go wrong with Brooklyn as your backdrop. And not to be left out, the break out star of this film is Destiny Monet Cruz as John’s daughter, Luka. Worth mentioning is Deidre O’Connell who plays John’s mother. That being said, I adored the rest of the ensemble cast. I couldn’t have cared less about what they were trying to say, and that’s awful. I didn’t care about either one of them and that’s the entire point of the story. It pains me to say this, but both performances fell completely flat for me. Frankly, it’s predictable.īonifacio also plays the lead John, while his real life wife plays Juliana Gelinas Bonifacio plays his ex, Georgie. There is nothing special or particularly interesting about the story. Unfortunately it just plays out in a mundane fashion. It should be a story of making good and finally growing up, and it is. Directed by Matthew Bonifacio, the story revolves around a former baseball player who runs into his ex girlfriend and the 7 year old daughter he abandoned before she was born. So when I had the chance to view The Quitter, I was immediately interested on what Gullo would churn out next. It was incredibly unique and and completely unpredictable. Bill Gullo‘s sci-fi/thriller really knocked it out of the park. Though this movie is rated R and definitely has adult themes, they are based on 'family' situations making this suitable for teens somewhere in the 13-15 year range and older. When I heard that the screenwriter of +1 had a new film out there I was elated. The acting was quite good, while Greg Germann was absolutely outstanding. It is not perfect and sometimes we get too much too slowly. This movie will surely make you laugh, think and take you through some entirely awkward, heavy and uncomfortable situations. There's also the dilemma of going too far, regardless of what's happened. One wonders how teenagers can survive and grow into proper human beings when their minds are constantly bombarded with aggravating and sometimes overtly disappointing adult/parental behavior. How far is a teenager willing to go when his home life is compromised by selfish parents? Quitters gives us plenty of angst, loss and pendulating moral predicament. Everything did not hit home, but somehow you find yourself 'feeling' the situation even if you don't like the character so much. Being 25+ years removed from the main characters age, I was still able to relate to his family dysfunctional mess. Sometimes a movie comes along, where it hits home in kind of a way where you can excuse some of the nonsense.
